The mission of the Counselor 教育 Program at newbb电子平台 is to provide quality instruction and supervised experience to prepare our students to learn, 引领, and serve in a diverse and changing world and to contribute to our community through providing counseling services, 研究, 合作伙伴关系, 培训, and other related service activities.

Students and 教师 in the newbb电子平台 Counselor 教育 program are guided by the American Counseling Association (ACA, 2014) Code of Ethics and are committed to the ethical practice of counseling. 在教室里, 实地考察, and extra-curricular activities, we acknowledge and value the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of our students, 教师, 现场监理工程师, 和客户. We believe that an emphasis on diversity, 包容, and advocacy strengthens the learning experiences of all.
As a program in The 巴顿教育学院, we share a commitment to diversity and 包容. The ACA (2014) Code of Ethics Preamble identifies five core professional values of the counseling profession that embody our commitment to ethical practice:
- enhancing human development throughout the life span;
- honoring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in support of the worth, 尊严, 潜在的, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural contexts;
- 促进社会公正;
- safeguarding the integrity of the counselor-client relationship; and
- practicing competently and ethically.
The consensus definition of counseling (Kaplan et al., 2014) describes counseling as a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, 家庭, and 组 to accomplish mental health, 健康, 教育, 职业目标. To do so effectively involves an ongoing commitment to the aspirational Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (Ratts et al.， 2015年)得到ACA的认可.

Counselors are aware of—and avoid imposing—their values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, 学员, and 研究 participants and seek 培训 in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory.
All students admitted into the Counselor 教育 program are required to sign a statement regarding their commitment to supporting and working with clients of diverse backgrounds.
